Volunteer Opportunities

“Develop an interest in life as you see it; the people, things, literature, music-the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself."

- Henry Miller

Grand opera “Alaskan style” would not be possible without strong volunteer support. AO volunteers come from all walks of life and from diverse socioeconomic, religious and ethnic backgrounds. From seasonal to year-round opportunities, there are many ways to volunteer at the Opera!

Administration
Volunteers are often needed for administrative tasks like filing, copying and answering phones. Other departmental needs include assembling AO mailings, collating, data entry, sorting of press clippings and research. Training and instruction are provided as needed.

Costume Shop
From stitching (hand and machine) to embroidery, needlepoint, beading and other special detail work, seasonal volunteers make costumes come to life. In the off-season, volunteers are needed to assist with the organization and maintenance of costume storage and stock.

Student Dress Rehearsals
These select dress rehearsals are offered three times per season for youth 6 to 18 years of age. Volunteers assist with the program, ticketing, contacting teachers and other duties the day of the rehearsal.

Production
Volunteering with the Production Department provides opportunities to experience what goes into creating a production and may involve assisting with some or all of the following: set building, costume set-up, rehearsals, etc.

Supernumerary
Supernumeraries are volunteers who appear on stage in mute, non-singing roles, much like being an extra in a movie. Being a "super" takes lots of time and patience, but is fun and a great learning experience.

To become a volunteer with AO, please download the volunteer application and follow the mailing instructions. Questions? Please contact us at (907) 279-2557.
