A troupe of strolling clowns arrives in the village. Canio, actor-manager, becomes suspicious of his young wife Nedda when Tonio, another actor, tells him that he saw her with a lover. Nedda, in fact, plans to elope with Silvio, a young villager. They are surprised in their rendezvous by Canio, but Silvio escapes unidentified.
In the show that evening, a situation similar to real life is enacted, with Columbine hiding her lover from her jealous husband. Canio, beyond control, demands the name of his wife’s lover. When she refuses to tell, he stabs her. Silvio rises in horrified protest, whereupon Canio stabs him also, then turns to the audience and sobs that the comedy is finished.

Synopsis
Because of the scandal which she caused her noble family by having an illegitimate child, Sister Angelica has done penance in a convent for seven years. The Princess, her aunt, arrives to demand that Angelica sign a document which turns over her inheritance to her young sister, who is about to be married. When Sister Angelica inquires about her son, the Princess coldly tells her that he has been dead for two years.
The Princess departs, refusing forgiveness. In despair, Angelica takes poison. Recognizing too late that she has committed a monstrous sin, she begs the Virgin to give her a sign of forgiveness before she dies. In a transcendent vision, Angelica sees the spirit of her child, while a heavenly chorus sings of her salvation.
